Hi Hun, it was New Years Day 2004 when I quit. I quit without any help from patches, I did it Cold Turkey. I did found it hard for the first month, especially when I have a few drinks and when I am out with friends that smoke.

After that 1st month, it was easy to ignore the temptation. Today I can go with out a smoke, even when people are smoking around me.

I must admit though, I have had maybe 3 ciggarette's in the past 6 months. So yes it was hard, but I did it. I promised my wife I will quit and I did.

I'm 53. I smoked for 32 years and was smoking 31/2 - 4 packs a day when I quit (ouch). Haven't smoked since Sept. 20, 2004. It was very hard. I went from the 3.5 - 4 packs a day to 1 pack a day by rationing ( 1 every 45 min.) for 3 months and then quit cold turkey. No patch, gum or pill etc. 2 factors helped, I finally realized the importance of my health and also that I could have over $5,000 to spend elsewhere. Sorry to run on but I hope this helps somebody younger to realize it's not worth "being cool".

I had tried to quit several time,s and couldn't. Then i thought maybe the problem was i was trying-not quiting so i told my self i quit. It was very hard to break the habit of reaching for a cigarette. So i took to putting gum in my pocket so when i reached there was something to get. Well it worked and i was able to quit but i had to change to a sugar free gum my teeth were getting sugar damage. So now i am smoke free since summer 1980 and don't miss it at all.

I have tried to quit so many times, it is literally killing me, my lungs are screwed up, and if I don't quit I will end up dying of emphysema.
I tried patches, nicorette gum, cold turkey, the thing that looks like a cigarette, plus I was in the hospital with pneumonia and I had to have cigarettes even then. I have even tried cutting back and was down to 5 cigarettes a day, and started smoking over a pack a day again.
If someone has a sure fire way to quit then please let me know. Something different than I have already tried.

I quit with patches & a little gum could not go cold turkey
& i still get the urge 9 months later but it does not last long & i don't think I'll ever take it up again
I love the money & freedom from them
I really think its how you self talk to yourself, like saying i dont smoke anymore & being proud etc & not saying " its hard I can't do it etc"

That may be a factor, but not the main one. People who smoke cigarettes take many, many "hits" of their drug of choice every day. Much more than addicts of any other drug. So they're getting rewarded many times a day. Smoking becomes so entwined with just about every aspect of their lives that quitting it involves changes in nearly everything they do. It's the psychological habit, not the physical addiction, that is usually the biggest stumbling block to quitting smoking.

I found it hard, I tried many times to quit, only to throw away my smokes and wound up buying another pack.

The price of a pack around here $6.59 alittle steep for me,
so I made up my mind and quit.

I did buy that inhaler which was very successful with me.

Good Luck

No, Katie. I had the grand daddy of all throat infections, so I took advantage of it and quit. It took six weeks before I could try again, and the first gasper made me so sick I've never touched one since, and that was twenty-something years ago. They were $1.75 a 30 pack then in South Australia. Now they're . . .how much?

I say if you REALLY want to quit you can. I am a smoker and I know if I really wanted to quit I could. It will not be easy, but if you want something that bad you can do it!

I did it the easy way - never smoked in the first place.
