Americans have a right, and a DUTY, to speak out about the government and correct perceived mistakes.

Yet it is also true in this media age that our enemies monitor domestic developments to determine whether America has the will to continue to fight, and also seek to affect the national mood. Communications intercepts have confirmed this.

So I have a sincere question: how does one critique the war effort and seek to change policy without worsening the situation "on the ground" at least in the short term?

Again, I'm asking sincerely because this is something we should all think about.

I generally support the war effort but again people have a right to speak out.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I don't think you can. I think that people who make statements like this want to be politically correct. And please don't come up to a Service Member while they are in uniform and make a statement like this. If you do, you are being very unfair since the Service Member is not permitted to react in the way that they would like to while they are in uniform.

Once upon a time, America would go to war to protect our way of life in the US. We would never declare war on a soveriegn nation without provokation. Paul Wolfowitz wrote a piece during the first Bush's administration stating that the US, as the world's lone superpower, needed to be proactive and use force against those countries that pose a "potential" threat against the USA.
Fortunately, the elder Bush's administration found the idea repulsive and not very American. They simply ignored it.
GWBush seized upon it and used it for rationalization for invading Iraq, despite no evidence Iraq had anything to actually do with 9-11.
So, in answer to your question, I support the troops. They have been thrust into a war that was not neccessary and many have given their lives and limbs for this. Others are still there risking the above daily.
To what end? Bush conviently forced the retirement of the generals who had learned lessons from Vietnam. Such lessons as "have a clear cut goal, have a exit strategy, prepare for war, have equipment, etc." Bush had and continues to have none of these.
I support the troops. To serve your country as a soldier is a noble act. To be used as cannon fodder in a political war with no end in sight is senseless slaughter of our brave young men and women. They deserve much better.
I do not support George Bush or his failed policies. He was elected by pandering to the religious right and created a situation where a vote against Bush was a vote against God and Country. What tripe!
If we all as Americans would educate ourselves as to what is really occuring in Washington and leave the talking heads who are simply entertainers alone, the USA would be much stronger.
Thanks for my rant! Bring the soldiers home!

Speaking out against actions taken that put our troops in harm's way without adequate cause IS supporting the troops--in fact, its the only way to do so. Otherwise you are remaining silent while they are put in danger--when they shouldn't be.

And that is obviously NOT supporting them. Nor is stayin gsilent when you see the government doing something wrong.

The only people who EVER claim otherwise are doing so because they have something to gain from killing our soldiers or corrupting our government.

Which you might want to think about as well--because that's the kind of politician you're supporting by supporting this war.

First I will say personally my criticism is with the reasoning for the war. I don't have a problem with supporting my country or our troops! When one's reasoning becomes clouded is why we end up without a clear picture of where we are headed!

Stick to the facts. Bush and his policies suck and we've been told a bunch of lies, then quickly add, but I continue to support the troops and their families. I think everyone is smart enough to know that even though we don't support the war, we all support our troops, their families and loved ones. That just goes without saying.
