My mother has been very sick for a long time and since she's been sick my perspective on this has changed. I used to would have sent flowers or a plant, but people sent these things to my mother and the hospital staff didn't help her take care of them, they didn't get enough sun in her room, and she had to lay in bed and watch them die which only further depressed her. You can't send food because a lot of times they aren't able to eat it. You can't send balloons because they crowd up the hospital room.

Send a card with a nice note in it, a book of crossword puzzles to help pass the time, a novel that you think they'd enjoy reading, or a stuffed animal or ceramic figurine that you think they'll like. These things will mean so much more to them.

ME ! A visit from a friend can make their day! Call first find out what kind of diet they are getting [ you have to ask them the hospital can't tell you HIPPA] Bring them real food the crossword puzzle book is a great idea and the newspaper, Music their choice fo course, Some hospitals allow laptops ! If they don't have one and you do [hint, hint] Fuzzy slipper socks ! Readers Digest [ I know old peoples book] they have a lot of different articles and a lot of jokes! Anything that will help pass the time I have been hospitalized over 30 times and they are THE MOST BORING PLACES ON EARTH ! Hand held video games even poker and other ones you are tired of will seem like a whole new world to them ! Trust me.

Well if it is a female, I'd send flowers.
If is a man, how about a "Get Well Soon" card.

A package of cards, envelopes, stationary and stamps. I'd also try to get their family to bring their address book (this is if they are going to be there for awhile).

A new best seller book, me (to visit...people get lonely in the hospital!). Lotion for their hands and feet and I'd even rub it in even if they had monster looking feet :)

a plant,as some areas do not allow flowers..or a basket of personal hygiene items..or if I know them well enough I'd send them something they are into doing..like crosswords puzzles,a book,or magazines...My Nephew enjoyed an electronic game and a rubik cube..=)
