It is OK, but make sure that your motherboard supports 400 MHz RAM (pc400 512mb). Coz if not the motherboard might burn the RAM or it might harm your motherboard,

If both are supported then its ok to use the together. But the 2 RAMs will work on 266 MHz speed or less. If the RAMs are in two brands the speed can be less than 266 MHz.

The capacity will be 256 + 512 = 768 MB
resultant Speed = 266 MHz or lower than this

hope this helps,
Cheers

hey man! you never mention what kind of motherboard your using, anyway its ok to use two different clock speed ram but the disadvantage is the higher ram cannot work to its maximum speed, Note: (This is very important) the higher ram must be place in the front of the ram slot, then the lower ram must be place in the back of the higher ram, you can see that when you look in to the motherboard.

They should be fine, just one thing the 512stick will only work at the slower speed. The 256mb will not speed up the faster ram will slow down to the slowest speed of the other sticks...Thanks

ram has to be the same speed unless you can clock it to the same frequency.

Normally they will co-exist fine, weakness (if any) of them will start to show when you run memory testing programs
