It is not necessary to have anything larger than anything.
Telling from your current PC situation, ti seems like you have an old PC (from around 2003-2004 maybe?), a good amount of RAM is 1-2 GB now, and your video RAM is already good, but you might not have a good card (A good, reasonably priced card is nVidia GeForce 6600GT), however, your PC being old, may not be able to support the latest technology I mentioned there, so check your motherboard specs, do some research and see what is and what is not supported.

If you want a decent upgrade, go to 1 gig of RAM and a 256mb Graphics card, the NVidia Cards are nice. And the NVidia 6200 is pretty cheap. If you go too much more than that you may need to upgrade your motherboard.

I think you want to upgrade so you could enjoy the latest games. 512Mb RAM would be good but 1Gb is best.
Get at least the 7300GT graphics card. It is cheap and could play most games.
