There is a 17-year-old girl in Ireland who is four months pregnant, but her baby has a disorder in which part of its brain and skull are missing. If it is born it will not live for more than two days. The girl wants to have an abortion, but since this is illegal in Ireland she would have to travel to the UK to have it. She is in the care of the health service, who have contacted the police to stop her from leaving the country.

What do you think of this?

I think it's such a sad case, and I wish the courts would hurry up and grant her permission to leave. I don't know how anyone thinks she should wait out in agony only to give birth to either a dead or soon to be dead baby. A friend of mine is a midwife and she said that generally the pregnancy in induced as 30-35 weeks anyway, as normal labour/C-section isn't generally possible with this condition, nor does the baby generally even survive that long.

I also think the abortion law in Ireland should be changed ASAP also, to allow such circumstances to be taken into account, and more, it's so archaic at this stage, in the EU only Malta and Poland have laws as strict.

It is terrible. This girl is going to be in turmoil when she has to see her baby in such a bad way. Also the baby may be in terrible pain when she is born and in distress for the two days she may survive. This is an awful situation and this poor 17 yr old must be terrified.

It is her choice if she wants to come to England to save all the heartache she faces. The abortion will have been a heartbreaking choice for her to come to terms with and now the authorities add to all the heartbreak she faces, shame on them.

I don't agree with abortion myself, but in some situations it may seem the only solution for certain people. I wish you all warm wishes for the future and hope everything turns out well for you all. God bless xxxxxx

I think she shouldn't have had that baby in the first place. She is too young, she hasn't even fully grown, not just the baby. But, I guess she will learn out of this. She should have the baby, and like this other answerer said, hold it close to her heart as long as she can. The baby should have some love even if she/he is gonna die. This is very serious, the girl is having my sympathy.

lots of times the docs say that babies cant live sometimes there right but many times they have made mistakes the docs are not god she should have the baby and if it dies at least she'll know she didn't kill it why not give it a chance? you cant possibly know what the end will be/
good luck!!!

If it were my baby,I'd give birth to him or her and hold the baby as long as I could until she or he passed on. I would cherish those few hours

I think it's awful that she's going to have to go through her pregnancy and deliver a child who is certain to die. Poor thing, she has my sympathies.
