It depends what is the reason of staying this person in a hospital. I could visit this person and give a bunch of flowers or chocolate, some fruit like bananas, oranges.. but there are many distinctive things ;)

depends on why they are there, long stay - magazines, crossword puzzle books, deck of cards, books, *** child , try a coloring book and crayons, easy jig-saw puzzles, books, stuffed animal to hug ** if they are really sick, a card or two a day, a phone call if they can manage that, pay for the TV for a few days, or even a "big mac" if approved by the Doctor.

People don't like souvenirs reminding them of their sickness, so flowers that would wilt would be nice :)
