It doubled the size of the nation. It opened up new lands for settlement. Soon President Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark on their "Voyage of Discovery" to the Pacific Ocean. It gave the U.S. the port of New Orleans which later became the most important port for the South. It was part of "Manifest Destiny". This was that we were destined to expand our country from sea to sea. Unfortunately it led to an increase in slavery. It led to more slave states. It also led to further exploitation of the American Indians like the "Trail of Tears" against the Cherokee. I hope this has been a help to you.

Well, it gave the US a link across the continent, gave access to rich agricultural lands and a virtual highway along the Mississippi for starters.
