What about plums, prunes, or prune juice? Try to stay away from cheese, it tends to bind one up. Up the veggies and fruits, try a bran-based cereral, and oatmeal is good too. And try to get them to drink plenty of water.
I used to have the problem as a child. Some children just don't go as often. As it turned out, I had an enlarged bowel. No major problems with it, just meant that I didn't go as often as most people.
As long as the child is not in pain, not to worry. Just be careful with cabbage and other things that can become gassy. Trapped gas can bring you down like an apendix attack and is not very pleasant.
Good luck to you and your little one.

My three year old sometimes has this problem... as of more recently, anyway... If it is really bad, you should take him to the doctor... but, with my three year old, I gave him some pineapple and pineapple juice, and within an hour he was feeling much better... prune juice helps too, but he HATES The thick nasty feeling... (I don't blame him I don't think it's too pleasant either...) but, he does like PlumSmart--it's plum juice, that has the same effect (and the texture is MUCH better)....also oatmeal... and lettuce and other vegetables help keep the digestive system 'clean'.
But, if that doesn't help, he probably needs to see a doctor.

Young children, sometimes as young as a few months, have internal fistulas (fishers) and will hold their stool because it hurts to go. The next time you bathe him look at his rectum closely and look for a tear. There's nothing you can do unless it's infected but, keep it clean. It will heal on it's own shortly.
Give the child Apple juice, Prune juices or add some white Caro syrup, about a teaspoonful to each meal, all this to soften the stool.
Have your doctor look at him also. He may have another idea.

green vegetables like spinach almost every day along with the fruits, prunes, and whole grain breads. limit the snacks like crackers and peanut butter and cheese. food like the strawberry applesauce and froot loops can cause constipation because of the red food dye. this has to be everyday and not just when he gets constipated.
this may sound crazy to you but a misalignment in his neck can be a factor in constipation. my son has had this trouble since he was a baby. He is 4 and just recently he has been gong to the chiropractor and he has no trouble now. he is still on his "lots of green veggies" diet but he always was and its just now where I dont have to be so strict about it. I never even told the chiroprator about his constipation and the first time he saw him he said one spot in his neck was out and it could cause digestive problems!

Have you tried a little prune juice? Also, My mom will rub warm mineral oil on the lower portion of the belly...that really works. You can get minieral oil here in the states at the dollar store, it's really inexpensive.

My sis-in-law gives her 3-year-old fiber in his juice. I can't remember the name of it... metamucil or something like that? You mix it in water and it's supposed to be clear and free of taste. She does maybe a teaspoon or two a day at night before he goes to bed with apple juice. He wasn't getting enough fiber in his diet, despite all the veggies and fruits she was feeding him, it was just never enough. Talk to his pediatrician and see if they would recommend it, and ask how much would be appropriate to give him. It might help. Good luck!
