Approaching naming your character like a young couple expecting their first child and what to name him/her is a little superficial. I suggest identifying your character's main trait or traits, or something about your character that otherwise defines or suggests something important about him or her to your readers.

For example, in The Scarlett Letter, Hester named her illegitimate child "Pearl." If you've read the book, beyond the obvious irony, this is a very telling name choice because it also bespeaks Hester's love for the child's father, which was pure...even though the guy was a jerk.

A good English teacher or Lit teacher could give you more such examples and I believe this would lead you quite nicely to a meaningful name for your character.

When I hear "Cathy" I don't "hear" anything special. Keep working on it. And :) avoid baby name books and websites!

I know its cheesy, but I like names that have subtle meanings that tie them to the characters themselves.

For example: Anna means graceful so I might use it for a character that seems to 'float' rather than walk, or as God's grace, someone that is very forgiving, or I'd bring in the irony and give it to someone very clumsy.

It's a simple example, but by looking at the chacter, or about the feats that he/she will accomplish in the book, you can generally find one word to sum up the character, then using a thesaurus, or a babyname site/book you may be able to find something with meaning.

Or you could find a historical character with similar traits and make a play of their name...A Christopher for an adventurous individual who wants to find out for himself whether what the crowd says is true or not. (like Christopher Columbus).

While these methods will generally give you more traditional names, its not hard to manipulate them a bit for a more trendy name as well.

Good Luck.

I shall suggest "Selene", Selene is a very pretty name, but is also the name of the (roman) goddess of the moon. Now the moon is a very pretty site to gaze upon, and stands far away from everything else- therefore creating itself a reputation as unique.
