I'm 40yrs old and aged 11 or 12 remember mother once using her leather belt/strap to punish my brother for bad behaviour.

Both he and mother agree it is a shame it is not allowed now.

The crime rate in Singapore is very low. They use corporal punishment in their criminal justice system. Vandalism will get you publicly caned

I TOTALLY AGREE. I am not in the UK, but I am a firm believer in corporal punishment. Altho', I think using a belt/strap/iron cord/vacuum cleaner cord etc etc etc...is very border line abusive(depends on the parent). I am for between 1-5 swats on the thigh or bottom with an open hand-after the parent/caregiver has had ample time to calm down and decide whether or not the offense was really swat-worthy.

Yes I do.. I got my rear spanked and there is nothing wrong with me.. I do not harbor any resentment toward my parents. My "delicate" psyche was not damaged. I suffered no bruises ,bleeding, or any other long term damage from it.
I think it is a little wacky. Where does the micromanagement end? When the government starts telling everyone the kind of clothing to wear? One thing ties into another, in my opinion. The further government is away from my personal life the better.

When I was younger, I had alot of things used on me. These things did not teach me right from wrong, it made me angry, and I had nobody to lash out at. I do believe in punishment, but I don't think a belt is the right answer. Here in the US, spanking is not a crime, but if you use a weapon, and leave marks, it is. I do believe once in a while, a child should be spanked, depending on the behavior. I think it should be your own decision if you are not indangering that child. If that makes sense.......

I'm 52 yrs old and my parents never hit me once. Never did me any harm. I don't think physical violence is ever justified....and look at the number of abused kids. Where do you draw the line between corporal punishment and downright cruelty, harm and abuse. If nothing is permissabe then lines can't get crossed and there can be no confusion. It's just a no-no. FULL STOP. (The slogan of the NSPCC)
