He took 26 wickets in 10 matches, thats like 2 to 3 wickets per match with a modest Econ of 3.15. He was the outstanding bowler of the tournament and he was just slick in his bowling attack.
Again, He was the reason that any team didnt score 300+ in this Tournament because of his bowling attack which was at his best. and also he was retiring from his International Cricket and World Cup Commitee wanted to make it a special occasion for Mc Grath....
So, He does deserve that Man of the Tournament Award.

Glen McGrath
McGrath Bowled Very Consistently with a good economy rate and Removed Very Important Batsman At critical Situations.
Mathew Hayden
Mathew Hayden could not play Consistently Compared to Glen McGrath & Sometimes Mathew Hayden Slowed Down Drastically This led Glen McGrath to Become the player Of the Tournament or Player Of the world cup

I will answer yr question also meaning no offence to Mathew Hayden fans. No doubt Hayden scored a lot of runs in the WC and also scored the fastest century in WC histroy. But remember scoring runs and creating records is a relatively easier task in ODI's. But for a bowler and that too a person who had announced he would retire at the end of the tournament, taking 26 wickets and having a large part in the crushing defeat of opponents by the Australians is by any standards no mean an achievement. So he richly deserved the honour of Player of the tournament.

The Man of the Tournament was decided based on number of points each player has gained. The point system was based on the Man of the Match Award received by the player. For each Man of the Match Award a player got, he was credited with 3 points. Glen Mc Grath has got Man of the Match Award 4 times in the world cup and hence he toped the point tally with 12 points and was awardedthe Man of the Tournament.

The player of the tournament is worked out on the basis of the man of the match awards.
I believe this is the reason why glen mcgrath scored more points than mat hayden in order to get the player of the tournament award.

Because there was a voting system... 3..2..1, which was mentioned both on the telecasts and radio... Though I don't think the votes were actually announced. However, I clearly remember ABC commentator Jim Maxwell telling whoever was listening during the Sri Lanka/New Zealand semi-final that McGrath was leading by 1 vote over Mahela Jayawardena. So all your conspiracy theories about wanting to mark his retirement and whatever are kinda null and void.

Mathew Hayden-- head & shoulders above Smith and an excellent style of different openers & batsmen, possibly the main constructive batsman ever with such brute skill unrivaled with form of fulfillment he carried out, in no way seen batsman like him walk down the wicket, hit disdainfully & instilling concern interior the bowlers !

cos Mcgrath had the most points and he performed well in every match. Matthew Hayden did not score a lot of runs in every match. Mcgrath got wickets in his 1st over for 6times in 10 matches. the main thing was all of the australians got runs but they did nt owl as well as Mcgrath

the main reason why glen got it instead of mathew was he was the leading wicket taker but it came down to a point system

the way i see it is trying to compare the 2 is abit silly, honestly u need people to take wickets (McGrath was leading wicket taker, whilst hayden was leadig run scorer), both were extremely deserving but in the end there is only one winner
