just bought a fostex mr16 hd/cd seems very noisy in running is this normal or have i bought a faulty machine?

Usually you're going to run into fan noise. That's fairly normal. Should be a soft 'whirring' sound. Also HD is going make it's usual sounds, some ticks and whirs. Where is sound originating on the unit? If you're in doubt and just bought it have a tech take a listen. Better than waiting till it's out of warranty :)
