Scarlett is correct. And complex values are also used in Fourier and Laplace transforms which are used to calculate such things as filter response, spectral energy content, and servo-loop response.
They also frequently show up in mathematics where they can be used to represent differential equation solutions for oscillating systems. And they're all over the place in general mathmatical analysis.

They are used very commonly in electronics, where an alternating current can be represented as a complex exponential. This enables us to handle phase delays (which are introduced by inductive or capacitative components) very easily.
