Dirk Nowitzki is the NBA's most overrated player. He's exceptionally skillful, but he doesn't step-up in big games ... and he's certainly not the league's Most Valuable Player.
Can the league's best player also be overrated? I think so. Kobe Bryant is, and most NBA players agree, the league's best player. The distinction I make is, he's the best individual player. Kobe's limitations as a team player are painfully obvious. For this reason, I think he, too, is overrated.
There are LOTS of underrated players. You hear almost nothing about Ray Allen, Joe Johnson, Kevin Martin, Michael Redd, and Zach Randolph. Each guy averages at least 20 points per game, but their poor teams keep them out of the headlines.
Carmelo Anthony, Gilbert Arenas, Chauncey Billups, Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh, Elton Brand, Eddie Curry, Luol Deng, Pau Gasol, Ben Gordon, Richard Hamilton, Josh Howard, Jason Kidd, Mike Miller, Antawn Jamison, Paul Pierce, Jason Terry--these guys have superstar talent, but they don't grab many headlines. Oddly enough, most of them are (or were) on playoff teams.
THE most underrated player in the NBA is Tim Duncan. #21 goes relatively unnoticed because he's not an acrobatic, high-flying showman like Hakeem Olajuwon was, nor is he a streamrolling brute like Shaquille O'Neal. Instead, Duncan is a blue-collar player with impeccable fundamentals. He's also the second-best player in the NBA and one of the greatest players of all-time.

In general, the most overrated players are stars in losing teams, like Kobe, Allen Iverson, Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter, and Gilbert Arenas... sorry Gil, but you can't even win last year...
And in general, the most underrated players are players in winning teams who hardly get recognized. For example, the Pistons, Bulls, Warriors, Grizzlies (well, before this season), and Raptors. Pistons is pretty weird for this category, because they are hardly mentioned individually, but they are mentioned a lot as a team. Grizzlies are also pretty weird in this category, but remember they made the 8th, 5th, 5th seeds in the playoffs for 3 years straight in the western conference southwest division. That's something most eastern conference teams can't do.
But for the past 2 years, the most overrated player is Kobe, and the most underrated players are all those in LA Lakers except Kobe. Kobe is like a vampire who sucks the careers of his teammates away. It's ridiculous to put his name and MVP in the same sentence. MVPs are supposed to make his teammates better. All the players on the Lakers had star potential when they first joined the team. And suddenly, they all became like third rate, D-League. Let see, what is the common factor? Oh, I see a rather large correlation there. Wasn't LA winning a lot this season when Kobe was injured? He came back, start messing things up, and the Lakers bearly made the playoffs? When losing, share the ball. Share the blame. When winning, hog the ball. Be the hero.

lebron james is overrated...all this about when he when he when he...and he wont win a title until he leaves cleveland or they fire that coach... dont get me wrong, he is very talented, but does he look like a champion? to me no...they were supposed to walk over an undermanned wiz squad, also overrated Steve Nash...while he plays well and is the motor who makes the Suns run for an MVP he hasnt led his team to any measurable success, no finals appearances much less titles...Ive said for years that Manu Ginobli is underrated...I discussed this with a NBA general manager long ago...he has always created matchup problems for other teams, drives fearlessly (as does parker) crashes boards and does whatever is necessary for the team to win...today, I think the least appreciated player in the NBA is tim duncan...not underrated because people around the league know tim is very talented, stats alone bear that out...but since he doesnt jump 4 feet off the ground and is fundamentally sound he wont make ESPNs top ten plays every night...

most overrated is Steve Nash. While he's a good point guard and open jump shooter, he is a complete defensive liability and his body often compromises his abilities, causing him to have high turnover numbers.
The most underrated player is probably either Raymond Felton or Deron Williams. Both are great young PGs. I'll say Felton is more underrated, because he plays for a bad team and so doesn't get any recognition whatsoever.

The most overrated has got to be Nowitzki. I love the guy but MVP? No way. I mean he is a great player but he is overrated for sure. Most underrated? That is much harder. I don't know the answer to that one.

kobe bryant is the most overrated and tim duncan is the most underrated. And i really dont have to give reasons its obvious. If lakers fans say that this is hating on kobe or lakers its not. You guys should admit he is overrated. How can u compare a player to jordan if has not won a single mvp or nba finals mvp. I mean thats just ridiculous. He is a great player, but the hype is just too big. ANd tim duncan won back to back mvp and won 3 nba finals mvp and 3 championships, no1 talks about him and how versatile of a player he is. He can make outside shots and defensively drop the hammer when he needs to. A great player i really think he should be given more credit than he gets.

overrated is steve nash, they compare him to magic Johnson, magic has multiple rings, and played defense. magic has the record for most triple doubles in the playoffs with 30, i dont think nash has any. so he gets a lil too much credit, for you to be one of the all time greatest players, you have to play both sides of the ball. \
there are a lot of underrated players, like deron williams, gerald wallace, udonis haslem, ray allen, and too many more.
