I'm considering restoring a Studebaker Commander Starliner and was wondering what engine I could put in it. I know very little about car restoration, I'm just researching costs. I'm not shooting for authenticity, I just want a good engine that will fit and pass CA smog standard tests.

I'm a Studebaker "purist" myself, and I'd get a re-built Studebaker 259 V-8 to put in there, and they aren't hard to find, actually. One of the great things about restoring Studebakers(I'm currently working on TWO) is that parts are easy to find, and there's a solid support base of Stude afficianados. If you aren't a member of the Studebaker Drivers Club, it would be a good idea to join. There are members who have "modified" Studes, that is, those with other-make engines in them, who can better advise you on which way to go if you insist on modifying your Starliner(absolutely gorgeous car, by the way). You can find out more, including links to suppliers, below.

Back in the 60's I saw one with a hemi in it. The guy had just gotten it finished and took it out to try it and the motor mounts busted and the engine fell on the tie rod and he wound up crashing it. But he got it in there.
