Nicely trimmed or shaved is fine, its all a matter of personal preference. I think you are right by saying you don't want very long pubic hair. I think you may find most men regularly groom this area.

Now what you want to do is Trim down the hair all the hair around your penis/pubic area, leave about an 1 1/2 inches in length. it's a much cleaner look and feel.
unless you want to shave it clean.
as i been doing for years now.

I'm a girl but I can't imagine this not working just as well for a guy. I just lightly pull my hair a bit and hold it with one hand, and hit it with short strokes of the razor a few times until all the hair has gotten out of my hand. This usually does nicely for trimming and leaves them at varied lengths.
That is assuming you just mean trimming longer hair not getting rid of it altogether.

How did you have pubic hair when you were a kid? I guess you'll just have to keep trimming.
