THERE ARE NO SUCH THING AS MOTIVELESS MURDERS
THEY MAY SEEM THAT WAY TO NORMAL PEOPLE
BUT THE CRAZIES THAT COMMIT THEM ALWAYS HAVE
A MOTIVE............THEY BECAME A PART OF LIFE WHEN CAIN KILLED ABEL.............YOU DO REMEMBER THAT STORY......THERE'S NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN...........THE MORE THINGS CHANGE, THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME

Serial Killings, depending on how you see it, had been around for many years. It is just that with the advent of media and communication, we seem to be more aware of this problem. Some people has put the blame on the recent VT shooting on the availability of guns in the States. However, I think that they are looking at it too simply. Any objects will have its positive and negative usage. A gun, in the possession of the right person, may achieve positive things eg. saving another person's life. Therefore, the problem is not with the guns, it is with the person using the guns.

In my opinion, I think that a correct approach will be to look at the deterrent factor for using a gun illegally. I know that death sentences may not be looked upon favourably by a lot of people but it is the ultimate deterrent. In the states and a lot of other western country, this deterrent does not apply. The worst is life imprisonment. But to a nut case out there, it may not sound too bad - government providing food and lodging for the rest of your life. Where is the fear factor?

No. They've always been with us. We're just more AWARE of it now- because there's so much "instant media" for us to plug into. Remember; once upon a time, "news" traveled by boat, foot or horse. It was very slow, sketchy & EXTREMELY limited in its content. Time passed, & there came newspapers; the railroad, telegraph service, telePHONE service, automobiles, radios, airplanes, television, computers, the Internet, and NOW news via Cell Phones!!! -And we are INUNDATED with information coming at us ABOUT everything- FROM everywhere!!! I'm certain murders happend all the time in Richmond, VA- in the mid-1700s...-But how many people ever heard of them- in Boston, MA. ? Trials, troubles & tribulation- have ALWAYS been around us. We just have never been able to, "see so far...or "hear so well.." -as we do NOW... :)

death is as much a part of life as birth
so to that effect when a women gives multiple births ( usually 5 or more ) we tend to have small media stories or documentaries on it..
so the same can be said about serial killing, mass shootings and what not.. we have been conditioned by the media ( if not our own sense of morbid curiosity ) to seek out the info on the tragedy and then quickly tuck it away after a few days ( witness it over 1 week since the VT shootings and it's no longer leading any headlines anywhere ), so the cycle of life and death becomes part of the American culture ( keep in mind most foreigners seen this as unique western theme along with our gun culture )
as much as we abhor these tragedy, we in a sense are apathetic towards such event in that all though we hate them we seldom do anything about them, and as such accept them as part of American culture. keep in mind these incidents can seem far removed as they tend to happen to other people and so we cannot really imagine the pain. we are used to crime dramas on TV if not docu dramas on TV as entertainment, this further embeds such tragedies in our part of life

As long as there have been human beings around, there have been murderers among us. It's nothing new. Nor is it new to make it a spectacle in the media including news, movies, television, etc. I've learned to limit the amount of what I take in from these sources. There's also much goodness in the world, but it doesn't sell advertising.

I am afraid it will be like that for a long long time unless we change the culture we live in. There is too much pressure on the individual to compete and excel. The guys you mentioned are the dropouts in this crazy rat race.
