There are laws that safeguard "intellectual property rights" of an owner of a properly documented work.

First write down all the details and mail it to yourself by certified mail. It is called a poormans copywright. Then you can go through more formal means. But, that way you are covered if someone tries to rip you of your idea in the future.

Study the Wright Brothers. The were the first to fly but focused on patenting their first models while the rest of the world kept developing flying machines and quickly passed them by.

I agree with #2. Just do your thing and expect to be copied. it's up to you to stay ahead of the game.

I invented a convenient home interior item and began selling it in 2001 and it hasn't been copied yet. So just go do it already.
