Two things. One is history and culture related. Back then, white rice was associated with high class, as brown rice was the "left overs" that only the poor could afford. However, it was well known that the poor rural chinese ate brown rice congees when they were sick. Think chicken soup in America. White rice was considered more refined and luxurious.
Second, brown rice also has a nutty flavor that accompanies it. Chinese food often depends on rice to be a vehicle for flavor of the dish eaten with it. So if brown rice were used, it would alter the flavor of the dishes served if it were eaten with it.

If you're eating Chinese, the most obvious choice to make is avoid anything that's fried. Sadly, most meat dishes in American Chinese places are deep-fried, so you'll have to scratch sesame beef, general's chicken, and sweet & sour pork from your choices. The only specific meat dish I can think of that isn't fried is broccoli beef, but I'm sure there will be other items at the place you go. As a general rule, avoid duck, fried rice, and those disgusting yellow noodles at all costs--they're packed with calories. If the place has brown rice, take that instead of white rice. Fish, tofu, and vegetable dishes are probably your best bets, though they will probably be stir-fried in oil. If you see some steamed vegetables, load up on those--almost no calories. Accompany the vegetables with a saucy tofu dish, and you'll have a delicious and healthy meal. Relatively healthy, at least. I'm not sure what you mean by "taco things," though. The only thing that comes to mind is mu shu; that's rice pancakes filled with shredded cabbage, fried egg or meat, and a sweet sauce. If you're offered mu shu, ask for a vegetarian one--they're delicious, and have fewer calories than other appetizers, such as potstickers or fried spring rolls. Good luck with your choices!

I'm not sure about the Chinese, but I live in Japan (where the people live the longest), and brown rice is starting to catch on, but it's not really popular. Here are some reasons I've heard of:
1. Pesticides in the bran -- they feel safer if the brown is completely scrubbed off.
2. Associations with poverty during the war, when people had to eat more brown rice.
3. It's chewier and doesn't have the right "texture" -- which is super-important for rice.
4. Traditionally, the side dishes consist of many, many vegetables, lightly cooked. You'd get your fiber from there, so maybe you wouldn't need the extra fiber and vitamins from brown rice.

rats used to eat the whole rice and flour.when it was milled and processed and put into bags.
then someone decided to refine rice and flour about a hundred years ago.. taking most all the nutrients out of it.then the rats wouldn't get into it and eat it. they might taste it .but will not eat it.so it has saved much money .from what the rats used to eat.now many people are used to eating it.white. not whole.grain.It would appear that were not as smart as rats.when a person over loads there blood stream with all that unusable foods particles by eating white processed foods like that. it causes a lot of problems health wise.i haven't eaten white rice nor white flour products in over 35 years

Its part of their plans for world domination. They sell Americans the greasy fried rice while laughing away eating their healthy white rice.
