according to the maya calendar and that of other ancient peoples, some celestial event is supposed to happen that will change life on the earth on (maya) 12-21-2012, or according to one authority, in october 2011.

would anything cause the earth to wobble instead of stay steady on its axis?

will there be a huge solar flare, and if that is scheduled to take place then, what could happen to the earth?

will there be any special alignment of our solar system with the center of our galaxy, the milky way?

what physical proof exists that conforms with predictions based on the maya calendar?

could current global warming that is not caused by human activity be caused by changes that are beginning to happen now as they relate to december 21, 2012 or october 2011?

what sorts of weather changes could be experienced as a result of some special alignment of our solar system with the center of the galaxy, or by the earth wobbling?

FOR BRUCEBIR... heck, no, i myself am not predicting an end to the world. neither did the maya. they simply had the best calendar ever, to date even, based on the stars. and they sure as heck did know about asteroids and comets, since their are depicted on their coda and walls. but it's really rotten that the spaniards, bent on converting all native americans to catholics, destroyed so many coda. we could know better if they had not.

i am ONLY WONDERING what science may stand to support what the maya wrote and said. it WAS NOT "the end of the world," it has to do with a drastic change, and possibly, really horrific, frightening, destructive storms in 2011.

and so, i asked here, to see what y'all know/think. that's all. it's an inquiry.

You have many relevant questions. Some of which I am also searching for. So I can not hope to try to answer all of them. I will try to provide you with some of what I have uncovered and will include references so you may find some of what you are looking for.

For now, let me say that we may find ourselves in an energy state that allows some of us to connect to the essence of god (vibrating energy). This may sound far fetched, but perhaps you have heard of a U.S. government's top secret experiment called the Philadelphia Experiment: In an effort to camouflage a ship from the enemy, a strong electromagnetic field was created around the ship. Surviving witnesses claimed the ship dematerialized and rematerializes miles away, when the field was applied and then shut off.

Both dates you refer to are significant. Late in 2011 or early 2012 we will experience a planetary alignment along with the expected cyclical 11 year solar pole shift. At this time, a pole shift may also occur on Earth. NASA has already confirmed that our North Pole has started to migrate to the South Atlantic. A decrease in our magnetic field has also been detected. In late 2012, we will be positioned, in our galaxy, in such a way where we may cease to exist as we do today. If you would like to read about the Mayans and their predictions for the time, I have summarized them here:

Geologist Gregg Branden gave a lecture back in 1996. He spoke of how ancient traditions and beliefs, of the coming new age, can be explained in the language of modern science. Granted, it may not be "proof positive", but he does show there may definitely be something to Mayan predictions about a catastrophe (pole shift) as well as life ending as we know it.

In his two part video, Branden explores scientific studies that support ancient prophesies, including Mayan prophesy. He does not go into great detail in terms of the Astronomy and root causes of the prophesies; I imagine that our science is still in its infancy with regard to this futuristic event.

There will be a transit of Venus in 2012. There was also one in 2004 and nothing untoward happened them either.

The short-term periodic Comet 96/P Machholz will return, perihelion anticipated on June 26 2012. It had a perihelion in April 2007 too and pops by every 5 years and 3 months to say "Hi". Nothing untoward on any of its previous appearances either.

How on earth do you suppose the Mayans conceptialised alignment with the centre of the Milky Way Galaxy when they did not know there was such a thing or that we were part of it, in the Orion Arm?

This has clearly been tacked on by latter-day New Age believers. I once had a Mayan Calendar freak proclaim on Yahoo Answers that the Mayans had foretold the earth would be destroyed by an Asteroid in 2012.

Jolly Clever of them, I replied, given they didnt know about asteroids, and nobody knew about asteroids till 1801 when 1 Ceres was first discovered. How very perspicacious of them!

Clearly, that too was added later to give the End Of The World Doom stories some spurious scientific credibility. It seems to me you are searching for similar tidbits of astronoimical data from which to concoct similar stories that would sound plausible as to how The End Of The World will happen and why.

The question is why would anyone want to do that? Are cults trying to fleece the gullible. as in the cult that committed mass suicide when the date of another End Of The World fairystory was upon them?

I find this all deeply suspicious.

the Maya calendar did not just stop because of the so called end of the world. the Maya people updated their calendar every so many years except this time it could not be updated because the race disappeared or died out just like the Incas. there was a program on it on the TV and i do know there is a site on it just look up Maya calendar in google and it should tell you something along the lines i just have in more detail good luck

The Leonid meteor shower will occur in november 2011. Also there are the Orionids, the Geminids, the Ursids and the rest of the meteor showers. You don´t have to wait til 2011 though. They happen every year and will continue to happen after 2012. And we will all be around to see them.

Hi.I have no idea. The only way to know for sure is to wait for October 2011 to occur.

It's a bit like saying" is it going to rain 1 day next week."
