I'm looking at buying my first car and was wondering how many miles are too many? How many are suspiciously low? Are old VWs easy to fix or find parts for?

Finally, what is something you wish you'd known about cars before you started driving?

hi!

Yes, VW's are easy to get parts from, they also run great still after thousands of miles on the clock.
I would say for 1992 model that most would be over 100,000 miles, I'd try & find one below that..(or around that) Under 60,000 I would be suspicious but then again just have a look at the wear & tear of the foot pedals & see if the gear knob is worn also the drivers seat maybe worn. aronud 70,000 & 80,000 is comman millege for a 1992 car.
Buying a car with motor way miles isn't so bad. Ask when the cam belt was last changed as If you do buy a car with quite a bit of millege this is the first thing you need check! : )
Diesel cars are very good too, you can get away with having alot of miles than a petrol, they last forever.
If it's your first time buying, driving a car then just check with an insurance company to how much it would be before buying.
hmmm...something I wish I'd known before driving....cant think of anything really..apart from when buying a car it can look spotless & clean & you might fall in love with that car BUT it's the mechanical side you need to know if that is A+ OK!! ; ) ( take a mechanic with you. ) hope this helps..

just divide miles to 15years less than 8000miles a year is good but if grandma use the car for grocery only at 5miles a day that's very good too.yes old VWs are easy to fix and find parts but its costly.

Japanese cars from the nineties are the most reliable cars ever made. i'd say anything below 160,000 miles is good for early nineties, and anything under 120,000 miles is good for mid to late nineties. beware cars that can't pass smog (if smog checks are an issue where you live). i wish i had known that cars are people too, so you better treat them the way you want to be treated!!

How a car was cared for, Maintenance & was it driven hard, will determine the useful life. That's why you're better off to buy from the prev. owner vs. a dealer. Good Luck

They figure on about 12-15K a year is normal.

I wish I'd have known how expensive auto's are when I got mine. They do cost a lot, with gas, maintenance, insurance, depreciation.
