Because they displace a greater amount of water than they weigh.

4. a ships design lets the iron displace more weight of water than the weight of the iron. you could take a nail and reshape the metal in it until you reached the point of boyancy, then again if you rehaped the amount of iron in a ship by making it narrower it would sink.

Because according 2 Archimedes' principle a substance when partially or fully immersed in a liquid it displaces the same amount of water which exerts an upthrust to the substance.In case of a nail volume is less so,upthrust is also less but volume of ship is more so,upthrust is also more.and according to printciple of floation abody will float if its upthrust is more than its weight.
thus on case of ship upthrust is more than weight but in case of nail upthrust is less than its weight.
