Happens on the plane all the time.
Ask them nicely to put the seat up a bit, usually they comply. Every once in a while you get an ill bred cretin that could care less. Then depending on the situation, you have to come up with creative methods for them to quit crushing your kneecaps.
I like the fake cough gig, that's usually a winner. Another one that can work is a newspaper fully opened, they usually get tired of the paper grazing the top of their head.

I think that happens to everybody! At least people who have been stuck in the backseat of a tiny car. Yeah once had to sit in a truck (in the barely nonexistant backseat) that had very very very squished tiny back seats, so i've been squished before!

When I was in a church class.... a really heavy chick scooted her chair back... & it landed right on my pinky toe... & as she sat down I screamed profanity so loud! It happened so fast that there was no way of avoiding the situation.
She broke my pinky toe & I was in alot of pain...
Not a good memory... but it at least answers your question somewhat! ;-)

yes, and it hurt. there are some things in life that should come standard with rearview mirrors, and chairs/seats are one of them.
