Evanger's, Felidae/Canidae, Innova, California Natural, Halo Pet-Spot's Stew, Nature's Variety (Prairie), Life's Abundance, Timberwolf/Serengeti, Natural Balance, Petropics/Tiki Cat/Tiki Dog, and Solid Gold are some of the more commonly known/available brands.
I currently feed Evanger's, California Natural, Felidae, and Tiki Cat to my cats. I did feed Natural Balance, but after the last two recalls involving their products, I don't feel comfortable doing so right now. Perhaps when things settle down in a few months I may be willing to try their foods with my cats again, but right now I don't trust them.

Canidae is an excellent food. I am planning on switching my girl to that once she goes to adult food. Although the food COSTS more, you will feed less because there is more nutritional value in the food. Think of it this way: If you are to eat a hamburger from mcdonald's and fries, versus a baked potato and some pot roast. What will fill you up more? The homemade meal because there is more nutrition in it. Basically, in the end, the cost will even out to be about the same. A large bag is about $60 in Canada, but it can be considerably cheaper where you are, depending on how far it has to be shipped, etc. Just don't forget to switch the foods properly, especially when going from junk food to premium. If you don't, with such a radical nutritional switch, they can get quite sick. Over a month or so, slowly mix the foods together. IE... 4 days 1/10th new, 9/10ths old, then 4 days 1/5th new, 4/5ths old, 4 days at 3/10ths new, 7/10ths old, etc, until you are completely on the new food :)

I feed my dogs Timberwolf Organics and they LOVE it. I love the fact that it has many flavours to choose from so I usually rotate them about every 3 or 4 months.
Some other good foods are:
Innova
Innova EVO - my dogs loved this food as well, but it was too rich for my Shih-tzus and cause loose stools but my labX had no problems
Canidae
Fromm
California Natural
Solid Gold
Wellness
Orijen
I know I probably left some out, but that's just the ones I can think of right now.

Just so you know, Purina is not a human grade food as someone stated, it is a grocery store grade food which really is not very good at all. Some great human grade foods for cats and dogs are Innova, Innova Evo (actually all foods made by Natura are human grade, there are a few different types) Wellness, California Natural, and Fromm. These are all great foods and your dog will most likely enjoy his food much more if it is made from high quality ingredients. All of these foods come is dry and wet varieties. Try to find a natural dog store near you, or go online if you have no access to these high quality foods.
Before the food recall i would have recomended natural balance as a human grade dog food, but in the last three weeks, there venison flavor dry dog food was recalled.

For Dogs: Solid Gold, Merrick, Innova, California Natural, Canidae, Fromm, Wellness
For Cats: All the same, but instead of Canidae, it's Felidae.
Sensible Choice by Royal Canin is another good one for Cats and Dogs
Natural Balance is great, they provide a nice variety of products, they are catching a bad wrap though because the recall. But there foods are put together very well.

I feed my dogs and cat Newman's Own Organic Pet foods and treats. You can go to the website and find where it's sold near you. It has not had any type recalled.
I believe Natural Balance had some food recalled. You might want to check into that.

As someone else suggested Natura brand food is Human grade. You will not find pet food bags that say human grade though, USDA does not allow it.
Natura has five different varieties of food to fit most owners needs. I highly recommend this food, after doing a lot of research for a paper on the brand and company.
http://www.naturapet.com/
The website tells you were to purchase since they choose not to supple to major chains, only privately owned pet stores and retailers.

Try looking at the ingredients listed on the food. The best ones have beef, chicken, etc....not by products or like chicken meal. I think Natural Balance is a good one, but I'm pretty sure they're one of the companies that's on the recall list.

I had to change my food to Natures Recipe because of the recall and my dog has had no problems with it at all. She is thriving on it and her coat and skin are very healthy.
