First of all: Abu Dhabi is the most expensive city in the Middle East. Dubai is second and Sharjah eighth. Many people think rents in Abu Dhabi would be less, but that's not true. Rents in Abu Dhabi always were higher than in Dubai.

A one bedroom apartment in Abu Dhabi costs around Dhs 40.000 to Dhs 60.000, without utilities, which might be another Dhs 150 - 200 monthly depending how many persons living in the apartment and how much electricity will be used. A/C in the summer time can get kinda costly.

A survey taking about the housing situation regarding rents shows the following results:

The survey says rents in the UAE had gone up by about 26 per cent over last year's rent, while the average salary increase stood at just 1.5 per cent, with most respondents reporting no salary increase at all. It also said the rent component of an individual's salary had increased from an average of 26 per cent last year to 32 per cent now.

According to the survey, six per cent of Dubai-based respondents planned to relocate to Sharjah to secure cheaper accommodation, while seven per cent of those living in Sharjah planned to move to Ajman. Twelve per cent of Sharjah residents planned to send their families back home compared to four per cent in Dubai and six per cent in Abu Dhabi. The survey forecasts that relocations within the UAE will accelerate in the coming months specifically from Dubai to Sharjah, and from Sharjah to Ajman due to the rent hike.

In Sharjah you might have the chance to find cheaper accomodation but where do you work? If in Dubai or Abu Dhabi you have to calculate a long and stressfull drive back and forth to work daily, especially during rush hours.

If a monthly salary of Dhs 14.000 will be enough, depends on the rent you will have to pay, on your life style and how many people have to live of this amount. If beside the salary housing, furniture allowance, transportation etc is provided, it should be enough.

Take care

Dubai is much more expensive than the other 2 emirates mentioned.
Sharjah is getting more expensive, as people who work in Dubai are moving there for cheaper housing...so get in quick.
Abu Dhabi is creaping up also.
14000..you are better off aiming for Sharjah or A.D.
Can your company not provide accomodation?? A lot of them do.

The salary you have mentioned is moderately high in UAE. The most unaffordable expense in UAE is house rent these days. I am not sure which place you are working for.

I would suggest you to look a suitable apartment in Sharjah that would be more reasonable rent than Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Good luck

Abu Dhabi is presently ranked 57 general, most costly spot in the planet for expatriates to live. I your salary is 9000Dhm it should be enough to live and spend on your food. You can also save some money, however, don’t expect to live like a king (although I would say you will enjoy, have a nice time and meet good people).

Living in any of these places is advisable... especially if you like living off slave labor. Read National Geographic.
These places are safe havens for slave traders and companies like Halliburton!
