Adlai Stevenson was a one-term governor of Illinois and ran for President of the U.S. against Eisenhower in the 1952 and 1956 elections. He lost both times. His shining moment was during the Cuban Missile Crisis when he went to the U.N. and proved to the world that the Soviets were lying to us about having nukes in Cuba. He sat there and let them lie about having the nukes, then he pulled out a giant aerial photograph of the missile sites being readied in Cuba. It was classic, and the Soviets were made to look like lying fools, which they were.

I think he had a lot to do with the Cuban missile crisis back in 1960-61-62. I think he was one of our negotiaters.

He played electric guitar, and there's a college at UC Santa Cruz named for him.
