The most accepted reason is (if it is, in fact, true) the government thinks the general public would go into a panic if faced with something it either doesn't understand or perceives as a threat.

The reason that the government would cover up ufo's would be for public safety. What do you think would happen if one day the president came out and said "aliens have been visiting us" People would panic, everything would get out of control. If aliens were proved to be real, most religions in the world would be destroyed, and people would not know what to do.

Which government are you talking about?
The CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales), The branch of the French government dealing with UFOs just made all the infos they have, available to the public on the internet. All the files. the pictures, the research, all the inquiries, everything...
It's like instead of having to deal with all the people asking about it, here it is...
That is democracy.
(they don't really have the proof of alien life but they have the proof of a big percentage of "unexplained phenomena"...those are not earthly things but you cannot prove there are not...)

There is no solid proof that aliens have ever been to earth and this is why:
The closest planest is how many million light years away and it would take them how long to reach us. If you believe the crop circles, why would they take all that time just to do that? Plus, crop circles are man made. The creators spilled the beans.
To answer your question, I would have to say out of our protection. Because, for the most part, people would freak out if they saw aliens or UFOs.

I think the Gov't has some super-secret stuff going on at area-51...stuff, inspired by so called UFO's.....But, i think the UFO phenomena is actually ultra-dimensional entities that come from a parrallel universe that co-exists in the same space that we do...(I personally don't think that our Gov't has a good handle on this phenomena at this time)......They will eventually reveal themselves at a point in time when (as they will say) that our 'evolution' will need their intervention.....Don't believe it when it happens, they are the enemy, they are demons, bent on the annihilation of the human race....But, before that happens, they will do many great and miraculous things for us.....I've read alot of books on the topic, and that is just my opinion...."Assuming" they exist at all......

there are various reasons. in case you remember the Orson Wells radio broadcast of conflict of the international's it panicked the country. the different reasons have greater to do with the overlaying up of technologies via the protection stress commercial complicated to guard huge industry, huge oil, and the completed financial equipment and the gross revenues of governments. each thing at present is out of date and has been for no less than 50 years. capability is unfastened and could be sucked precise out of the air by using fact of our sunlight. there is not any want for means lines, means plant life, roads, automobiles or gas once you are able to plug into the capability we are swimming in now and deliver something on a wave which contain count. the international could replace too quickly and the elite could by no skill supply in to the shortcoming of extremely maximum industries.

If it is true (which I don't believe it is), it would probably be to have exclusive access to alien technology, and to not incite panic amongst the population (which I don't believe would happen).
However, considering the nearest star (Alpha Centauri) is 4.3 light years away, I don't think extra-terrestrials are visiting Earth. 4.3 light years seems like a small number compared to the stars that are many thousands of light years away, but at a speed of 150,000 miles per hour from a passive slingshot maneuver, it would take about 17,900 years to reach Earth from this star.

Your first mistake is to think it's true. Be reasonable. Do you think a civilization as advanced as to develop an interstellar drive would give a hoot what the U.S. government did or didn't do? We would be like ants and they would study us like we would do a science project on rats in a maze. To use a tired old cliche, there must be intelligent life in the universe because none of it has bothered to contact us.

The government don't want to put fear in the American people. Therefore, they keep these files confidential. That is one theory. However, I have a question for you. We are a tiny planet. We have nothing to offer "aliens" from outter space. Why do you believe there are aliens visiting earth?
