How many babies on average do guppies have that actually survive and how can you tell the males from the females? Just wondering...

Well, as usual Magic Man beats everyone to the punch. But to answer the rest of your question you should buy a breeding net and keep the babies in there. You can also buy food specifically made for livebearing fish. As for being able to tell them apart you can probably tell by about 2-3 weeks but the males won't get thier full color until about 4-5 months old.

A female can have anywhere from 1 to about 75 babies. Normally you should expect about 25-30. How many survive depends greatly on what you do to protect them. Left in a tank with adult guppies and few hiding places, probably none will survive more than a day or two. If the female has a tank of her own with lots of hiding places for the babies and she is removed shortly after she has them, then you could expect most of them to live to adulthood. Assuming of course you provide proper care to the babies.
