Its just a type of fabric. Old people in the South (Where To Kill a Mockingbird takes place) sometimes refer to tablecloths and sheets as "Linen" even if that's not what they're made of.

Fibers usually made out of the flax plant Linum usitatisimum. Linen is two to three times stronger than cotton and used in the same way. You probably heard the old story of spining straw into gold. That straw was flax fibers.
