You always hear about who produced what track or whatever. Or when they win a reward. What do they really do?

The previous answers are totally ridiculous.

The producer, in many cases, is the guy or girl who oversees the production of the recording. That is, he or she makes sure the recording sounds good. He's the guy behind the recording console who, with the engineer, makes sure the sounds get recorded the way the artist wants them to. The producer should ideally spend time with the band and use his knowledge of equipment to get the songs recorded correctly.

In some cases the producers have suggestions for the artists - drop a verse here, add a chorus there, put in a guitar solo, etc., etc. There are times when a producer can go too far in this and dominate an artist's music, but in many cases this can be helpful, especially in the case of a new band.

In some rare cases the producer becomes known for a trademark "sound" that goes so well with the artist's music that you can hardly imagine the band without them. Steve Lillywhite was responsible for the great sound on U2's early records. Roy Thomas Baker was the producer for Queen when Queen was at their best, and of course Alan Parsons was pretty well known for working with Pink Floyd on "Dark Side of the Moon," and he was partly responsible for the fantastic sound on that record.
