A few options:

Cover it with plastic, like a tarp, or heavy cloth, or thick straw, or old plywood to block sunlight for a few weeks- this is the most ecological option as it preserves the nutrients of the of the decaying grass.

You can also get a bale of straw and spread it over the area and burn it. Works great and is good for the soil, but you could also start a big fire and it doesn't work well in tight spaces obviously. Never do this on a windy day, in dry conditions, and have a hose with you. Saturate the ground you don't want burned before you start it. Never leave a fire unattended. Proceed at your own risk- I assume no responsibility for this.

You could also do it the old-fashioned way, use a hoe and scrape the top layer of dirt off, or turn the soil with a shovel- just dig ang flip the dirt-side up. Good exercise.

Nature always finds a way- you can't eliminate weeds, you can just try to contain them. There will always be some work involved in dealing with them.
Good luck, don't hurt yourself.

I have heard of people using a soap and water mixture! Just using sudsy dish water should work! Like Dawn dish soap! Never tried it myself, but I've heard of people who swear by it!
I also know of people who mix up a little bit of bleach and water! But I live in the country, so we don't have alot of environmental laws enforced where I am!
I stick with round up usually! Good luck!

Gasoline works great, but it's illegal to use it. You can also use fireplace ashes which will make the soil so alkaline that nothing will grow there.
