Ok, it says here in a book that I was reading that chromosomes were made of DNA and so are genes. Does that mean that genes are a fragment of our chromosomes that are designed for a specific function?
Here's another one. There's such a thing called homolugous chromosomes. Does that mean that one comes from the mother and the other comes from the father because the gene loci are identical and the alleles are varied in some cases?
Is the allele, then, a form of gene that perform the same function but are an alternative form instead?

Hi Princess. A Gene is the section of DNA that codes for the synthesis of a protein. Chromosomes are made up of large sections of DNA, which are interspersed with many genes. (Note: most of your DNA is so-called 'junk DNA' because it does not code for a protein, that is, it is not a gene.) So, yes, genes are the many sub-fractions of our chromosomes that are designed for the specific function of coding for proteins.

I am not familiar with the phrase 'homolugous chromosome' and cannot find it in my Dictionary of Genetics (2006). Humans have 23 PAIRS of chromosomes (46 total) in each cell. 23 from mom and 23 from dad. These 23 chromosomes are 'essentially' the same, except that each gene (allele) can be a variant (often what is called a single nucleotide polymorphism or SNP - pronounced 'snip'). For example, your mom and your dad each gave you a gene for making an enzyme such as collagenase. However, you may have different alleles (different forms) of the gene from each parent. These two different alleles may work essentially the same, or one may work better (or worse) than most forms of the allele. So, yes, an allele is a gene that performs the same function, but it may have a slight variation in its coding that changes the effectiveness of the protein it codes for.
