I am no expert, but I think a wonderful bush for privacy is Photinia fraseri. They are very beautiful too, becoming red in the colder months. They are very dense and grow large quickly. There are several of my neighbors who have them without a fence, and I don't even think a dog could get through without some real maneuvering.
Hope this helps.

Forsythia are nice, have yellow flowers in bloom, take a shear well, fill in evenly, and although they lose their foliage in winter, still have a dense frame which obscures views. This is a commonly used plant for privacy hedges.
Thuja Arborvitae are evergreens with a tight conical shape, grow relatively quickly and have a maximum heigt of about 10'. They are not wide though, so many will be needed- very nice, though.
Many types of holly (aka ilex) will work well also, and their foliage is evergreen and prickly. They take a shear well also. They grow somewhat slowly.
If you have a long stretch you want to screen, you could also think of conifers typically used for christmas trees, such as frasier or douglas firs.
Check with your local nursury to make sure plants you choose do well in your climate, and they can also recommend other options.
Remember, if you are planting trees on the south side of your house, use deciduous trees so they shade your property in the summer and allow light to your property in winter.
Good Luck.

The most common bush used in my area is an Azalea! it is a beautiful dark green bush and it flowers in the spring, generally around Easter time! You can get them in a watermelon color, or white, or light pink or mixtures!
Not sure where you live, but it's the most common around Louisiana and Mississippi and the rest of the south!
They grow rather rapidly and aren't very hard to maintain!

would say Arborvitae are a nice and inexpensive choice. They can be planted closely together and can grow to heights that are 6 to 18 feet depending upon the species. Emerald Aisle Arborvitae grow to about 8 feet and strongly resmble minature pine trees.

Hedges are what you're looking for. There is a Japanese one that begins with "T" that is supposed to grow very quickly and is hardy as well. Good luck!!
