Play boy pet ?
LOL !
I think dogs outnumber cats right now as pets. As for too many in the shelters, it may look like dogs because most cats aren't caught - they are hard to catch - and many are trapped, neutered and released back into the colony as opposed to killing feral cats.
I absolutely, without question, would have a hard time without my affectionate Dalmatians being around.
They are great buddies and love to do just about anything especially if it is with * you! * Dogs have that " 6th sense " that helps disabled, guide the blind and deaf, can detect cancer, seizures, diabetes, find drugs or lost people, hunt for food, chase food down, watch/guard/protect, play, or simply lie close and provide touch. I have put many obedience titles on them and currently have 3 champions - ha, on the couch ! Dals are just smart !
I've had 8 different breeds, shown probably 15+ different breeds, and 5 mutts, rescued pits, GSD, mutts, cattledog, Chihuahua, Collie, Rotties, Malamute, Grehound, Whippet, Beagles, Goldens, Poodles, etc, etc, ..... and I would never give up my Dalmatians.
Actually, Dals are quite happy dogs like labrador retrievers. Right now, I also have a red Australian Shepherd and a Weimeraner.
I love my horse, too ! She comes when called like a dog, likes to follow me around in the pasture, picks her bucket up and tosses it until I feed her, will drag sticks and pick my stall cleaning rake up and carry it off ! She also takes the hose out of the tank when I am refilling it ! She likes to be sprayed with water in the summer and will chase my other horse and donkey off to get most of it on her! She drinks from the hose, too. I can go on!
There are 2 Boer goats and 1 lamb at the barn, too. So gentle, they lead and you can pick them up, too ! Great when you need goat milk for someone or a puppy!
I have a cat named Clyde. He is a free spirit.... but he knows who feeds him! He used to wander off a bit, but since being neutered once he got over 1 y/o, he is content. He doesn't seem to understand why dogs are happy all the time - I swear he'll roll his eyes !
I used to have a cockatiel and he was a smart, funny bird because I worked with him when he was young. Talk about a watch bird !!!! If a car drove up in the driveway, he'd start an alarm whistle and this would set the dogs off barking ! If the dogs saw before he did and the dogs barked, he'd go off, too ! I could not watch a hockey game for the referee's whistle and my bird knew the whole Andy Griffith tune! He'd do the first part of Jingle Bells..... other things.
I've had hamsters, mallard ducks, pigeons, and a pygmy goat.
I have 2 aquariums which are kinda relaxing but little interaction here.
My sister has dogs, cats, ferrets, has had rabbits and birds.
A friend has a corn snake and geiko, but I don't care for the big boas.
What is YOUR favorite pet ?

Actually, it was all over the news a year or so ago -- for the first time ever, there were more CATS as pets than dogs! But dogs are a close second, I'm sure!

Officially, dogs. They relate wonderfully to people and other pets.
Wanna know the unofficial dark truth? Cats, because people enjoy throwing them, and being mean to them.
