Possible topics might include the system of alliances between the Western Powers and the German bloc that lead them into a world war from the original provocation, the murder of Arch Duke Ferdinand. Also interesting might be the way that military capabilities exceeded military doctrine, leading to the trenches and killing fields of WWI. You could also look at how the stresses of war on various countries led to dynamic social changes, such as the Russian Revolution ad the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, or how the the war caused the U.S. to shift from an isolationist stance to one of engagement. Any of these would be interesting essay topics, I think although some may be too in depth for a short essay.
