It will cause you no harm, however since it is not water based, it is difficult to clean up after you are finished. (Never use with a condom during sex, as it will dissolve latex condoms). The ideal sexual lubricants are water based, and formulated specifically for that purpose. They are also readily available in any drugstore. If you are uncomfortable buying a product like KY jelly, realize the clerk at the Dollar Store is going to know precisely what you are buying petroleum jelly for as well. Suggest you consider buying either KY, or the store brand of KY (usually right next to it on the shelf), then use the automated check out.

KY makes a wide range and variety of lubricants, avaible for use by males and females.K-Y's lubricants do not react with condoms or sex toys, also.Astroglide is another one. These can be bought at almost any drugstore or discreetly online.

anything slippery will work but:
fluids with soap can irritate the urethra (pee hole)
and if you are with a partner remember:
oil-based fluids can dissolve latex
fluids that contain sugar can give a girl yeast infections if it gets inside of her (and you know that's going to happen)
There are many brands of lube:
KY
Wet
Trojan lube
etc.
They should be available in any pharmacy or grocery store pharmacy aisle.
Also there are sex shops like the links below that will sell you things online if you're not keen on buying in person.
Overall, the best ones are found in nature:
saliva
vaginal juices
pre-come

My husband and I use KY liquid lube because it is not sticky, it feels like natural lubricant. It is truely the best, don't use astroglide. Astroglide is sticky and you'll have to wash up after you use it, so that's why I don't suggest it.
