Serious Website promotion basically falls into 2 categories - paid and unpaid (free).

Effective free promotion in the search engines involves a lot of hard work and a significant time lag. Please don’t fall for this nonsense that its easy. If you’re in any doubt read some of the Search Engine Optimisation Forums online.

To quickly get high up in Google do the following

1. regularly read Google's webmaster help center pages for design, content, quality and technical guidelines at http://www.google.com/support/webmasters...
2. select keywords based on research - Main ones will be obvious but be specific - use your USP, locality, etc - make yourself into a niche.
3. when designing, keep content high quality and relevant (esp to keywords) - make keywords bold on site, each page minimum 500 words of content, submit a google sitemap
4. get your webmaster to design the site
5. check site works - internal links, browser compatibility, load time, no Under Construction pages
6. submit site to Google at www.google.com/addurl
7. get quality links - 15 minimum
8. submit press releases to PRWeb and Articles to ezinearticles.com.
9. Google tells you to "submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites."
10. now search for other directories to submit to

For quicker results you might consider Pay Per Click advertising. The best is Google Adwords although Yahoo have PPC as well. You basically set it up with keywords (words you think people will use when they search for a site like yours). Each time someone clicks on your ad and goes to your website you are charged a few pence. But again, the more you know before you start, the better. Rule 1 - You have to know how much a customer is worth to you before you bid on keywords. If you work on a 1% conversion rate and your paying 50p per click, it will cost you £50 to make a sale. If that sale is only worth £19.99 to you, you’ve lost £30.01 on the deal.

So please make sure you know what you’re going into

these are the standard methods. But don't be afraid of thinking creatively. Put yourself in the mind of your customers and think where they might go and how they might find your website.

A few free resources – check out the sources box for links:

1) Create a blog pertaining to your field

2) Use Yahoo! Local & Yahoo! Groups – Be sure to read the TOS for each one!

3) Write articles pertaining to your field and/or expertise.

4) Advertise on Craiglist

Also, consider signing up for an affiliate program. These programs enable you to advertise on other's sites (your affiliates) and once a sale is made to you, your affiliates & the program are paid a commission.

I listed a few handy sites & articles relating to marketing, promotion & advertising. Here are some book titles that are relevant:
