how can pregnant women still have periods?

Pregnant women typically don't have periods when they're pregnant, however, there have been cases where women have had their periods. Most of the time it's light spotting - which can be very common in early pregnancy. My sister-in-law had her period for four months into her pregnancy. I have a friend that had a very troublesome pregnancy but (now she has a beautiful 16 year old) she bled throughout her pregnancy - much less in the last few months.

Most don't but those that do (I had them well into my first pregnancy) have a kind of lighter fake period where the whole lining is not shed, just the parts not involved in the placenta. It happens.
