hp is better, generally, than lexmark. lexmark cartridges are notorious for random failure (and not being anywhere near full when new).
if you get an hp though, look into the ones with more than 2 cartridges.
epson is a great brand for printing spectacular photos. the downside is that their printhead carriages tend to clog up easily and badly.
i'm not really saying any of them are great, but if i were to buy one of the above, i'd go for hp or epson.

I prefer HP. I have used HP printers both personally and professionally for about 10 years. So far I have been well pleased.
I have never had a driver problem with an HP. I have had problems with the other two brands.
If properly installed and configured I have no problems with Windows XP.
Support is good but I have notice a small slip since they got in bed with COMPAQ. I think that was the merged company.
One of my favorite things about the printer is the print head. You get a new one with every cartridge. There is no degradation in printing clarity and I have seen that problem with a Lexmark. I haven't used an Epsom long enough for the head to show signs of deterioration.
There you go, my feedback to your question.

I have been a pro photographer since 1989 and went digital with the rest of the world. I have tried most all printers but I will never again own anything other than an Epson. I have 5, ranging in price from $89.00 up to $2,000. The $89.00 makes lovely prints right out of the box and although a lot of people think the 6 ink system is a rip off I have done extensive testing and it works out cheaper in the end. In my world, you just can't beat them.

im gonna say that IF ITS AN INKJET, HP IS BETTER, if its laser, lexmark is better. epson makes decent inkjets but is below hp and above lexmark to me. i own a hp inkjet & flatbed scanner and lexmark laser, go figure. no problems, both run great on xp! i used to own an epson and it was a piece of SH*T!
I USED TO SELL PRINTERS AT COMPUSA AND I USED TO SERVICE LEXMARK PRINTERS.
i have seen the same picture printed on both an hp and a epson, hands down hp wins.

I have a working Epson, Dell and HP. I have to say although all print well, HP has provided the best support so far. E-mails are answered in an hour or so.
If installed correctly, you shouldn't have any problem printing with WinXP.

I chose lexmark not for the printer features but the real cost of any printer . the ink cartridges mine uses one cartridge that lasts for about 4 or 5 months and only costs 19 bucks

After trying several of both brands I found Lexmark less
reliable and with more expensive cartridges.
My best experience is Canon printers.
