it isnt that the artists lives are tragic.. but rather the intense emotions born out of extraordinary circumstances and intense pain out of suffering causes them to be great artists ...
adversities challenges any preconcieved notions of life, forcing the mind to think beyond accepted norms. When the mind is shattered, when the feelings in your soul are stirred so deep... it redefines your vision & perception... the mind gains different perspectives when it is exposed to extreme circumstances..
art is about reaching out... you cannot connect with anyone else's feelings... pains, aspirations, dreams etc unless you have felt them yourself... the feeling of empathy is born only when you have felt extreme pain and suffering...
when the mind confronts hard hitting realities, the imagination soars in greater depths and heights...
sorrow is sweet... it touches your soul and brings out the most subtle emotions and sentiments in melodious expressions... and only those who have felt intense sorrow can truly appreciate the beauty and joys of life... the rainbow means more to the crying eyes than to the ones that never wept any tears...
art is a glimpse into the soul... into life... and the journey is filled with all hues of joy.. magic.. bliss... and sorrow...
and only those hearts can express the colours of life vividly ... which have felt all the shades intensely...

Most people have a tragic life, artists and writers are simply the people whose lives get attention focused them.
For example, ever watched 'Behind the Music'? They all have rough times. Tougher then everyone else? no, in fact you could suggest that the fame and attention (AND MONEY) that they recieved is evidence of good times.
A famous rock star who dies of heroin, after fame, fortune and groupies is no where near as tragic as that poor clod who OD's, never having had a good day in his life.
He (or she) is just not going to get their story told.

Because of people like you. I watched a Van Goth biography. Okay, it's not just artists but scientists and inventors have it tough too.
How is it my fault ? You ask. It's your fault because you don['t throw yourself at them. When Van Goth was alive. He was a starving artist. He moved to Paris. There were women around and he was trying to court them. But, due to his appearance and drunken breath. He got rejected. So, this emotional assault must of taken it's tool on him and many like him. If he was alive today and he was an aspiring man in art or whatever and he came up to you and asked you ou. You'd probably want to know how rich and succefull he was among other things. But, the poblem is that it takes a while to reach a certain level of achievment or success. Often, the artitist like Goya,Van Goth or Hokusai aren't really big. Until they're dead. Artists like Hokusai were ahead in was they couldn't even dream of. That illustration he made of the Wave. That's the first immage of a Fractal pattern in nature. A Fractal is discovery made over 200 years later by the Mathematician named Benoit Mandelbrot. If a modern Van Goth or Einstein or a Hokusai ran up to you in the streets showing you his sketches or equations. You'd probably freak out and run to the Police. Thinking some nut is following you showing you non-sensense.

Tragic thinking leads to tragic lives.
I prefer more lively and entertaining folks. The depressives of the world can head in the other direction.

Because they don't fit in.
Even if their work becomes recognised within their lifetime, it's their work that people admire, and not the creator of it. If a famous creator/innovator ever exposes his true nature to his admirers, they cease to recognise him, as if they never knew him.
Creators live their entire lives knowing that they have no real place in the world.

Most are risk-takers, this means they are more apt to be experimental with almost everything, which opens the door to broken hearts and tragedy, but also leads to great rewards.

Most are not. You just remember the one's that are. Most lead "normal" lives. Just like most non-artists.
