"You try nursing and when it doesn't work out, you switch to formula, and your baby thrives."
Not so fast, lady. SO many women "try," which can mean anything from in the hospital (my sister said, "I tried, but I just didn't have any milk." When I asked how long she tried, she said a day. LOL) to a month or two.
In my case, the first THREE months were difficult. Instead of quitting, though, I just relaxed (and yes, supplemented when my baby was still hungry), pumped more than breastfed at times, and helped her learn how. My baby was born early and had a hard time.
At four months, I'm glad I stuck with it. Breast is definitely best, and while I am still a little short of milk no matter what I do, at least my baby gets 75% breast milk to 25% formula. The formula she does get is very constipating, and I've read too many questions here on Yahoo Questions about constipation with formula to think that it's "the same" as breast milk. Besides, the bond is great, and my little girl is far calmer and more relaxed about going to sleep when she's had that attention and closeness.
Go for it--you won't regret it. I'm not on my high horse, either. I'm just glad we stuck with it.

yes breast milk is "best", it is not something you should do unless you are 100% committed to doing it. It is painful for a lot of women and it is a life altering commitment. Personally I found it weird and it felt unnatural. The only reason I did it was because people made me feel like I was a bad mother if I didn't. I breastfed my son for 3 days then I just couldn't do it anymore. After that I bottle fed him, he is 18 months old and perfect.
I think that a lot of the answers you have received have been from the type of people I encountered when I was making my decision. The fact of the matter is.. yes breast milk is better for your baby, BUT he/she can thrive and be perfectly healthy on formula. Don't let anyone make you feel like you are a bad mother if you don't breastfeed. It is not their decision it is yours. The fact of the matter is that it DOESN'T come naturally to everyone. Oh.. and contrary to some opinions.. it doesn't diminish your bond with your child either.

NURSING!!!!! It is a scientifically and well proven fact that the breast is better. Due to all the nutrients and vitamins essential in development. It is also showing that babies are less likely to develop allergies when breast fed. It also gives bonding time between mother and baby. Formula is good too, but the breast is a prefered method by majority. If you have to use formula dont get down on yourself, some women just cant breastfeed. I dont think its right when a women decides to give formula instead of breast milk just because they are being lazy...they are keeping their babes from some very good vits and nutrients.(this is for those who can breastfeed but chose not to for personal reasons).

Breastfeeding is the best! Twinmom can accuse me of taking the moral high ground, but when I encountered problems, I found the support I needed to continue to nurse my baby. Almost all women can sucessfully breastfeed their babies, but the right support and lots of effort on the mother's part is important in the beginning. After those first few weeks, breastfeeding is the lazy way to feed a baby! I can't stand the thought of washing bottles and preparing formula. I would much rather sit and plug baby in. Seriously, I don't know why anyone would choose formula in the beginning. I know that some women are unwilling to work through problems, and too many women don't know where to get help, but I choose to protect my baby's health and my own. I hope you'll choose that too. You'll love the relationship that develops after those first few problems are overcome. Looking down and seeing your baby look at you while nursing is priceless.

Nursing is best! Think about it...if formula is so great why do they keep coming out with new and improved!?! Granted some times people have no choice but if you do - nurse, at least for the first few months!

NURSING is best for baby as long as your drinking plenty of fluids and eating right and not on any prescription medicine. God gave you those boobs for your baby ;-) You should have the nurses or lactation consultant help you at birth to breast feed as soon as possible. Its not all easy at first but eventually its the easiest thing and you always have milk for the baby especially in the middle of night! Nursing is the best milk for the baby, in the first year of life, if you don't want to nurse that long, its okay! If you can give nursing a good first 6 months of life your helping your baby get its best foot forward in life. I hope this helps!
PS Don't feel bad if nursing doesn't work out for you, its hard work and can really be painful at times. If you try it and it doesn't work out don't let anyone make you feel bad! You tried and thats whats important. Just make sure you get a good formula with iron. Good luck and Congratulations!!!

I think that as long as it is possible, a baby should be nursed! God made us equipped with milk producers just for that reason. Honestly I feel that all the new and man made products are causing problems in our health. In some cases we do not have a choice though, so I am not trying to say anything bad about those who do not nurse.

As usual, I am going the other way from everyone else. If formula were so bad, would there be a government program giving it out? Also, if you breastfeed, that means that it always has to be YOU getting up in the middle of the night for feedings. My son was bottle fed. He is 3 and he is 40 pounds of muscle right now. He is the only 3 year old I have ever seen that can do a chin up!

Breast is definitely best for both baby and Mommy. It's cheaper, heck it's free. I always thought nursing was much EASIER, too, as there are no bottles to wash, sterilize, mix formula in, refrigerate and warm up when baby is hungry, you just offer baby the breast.
Even a few day's worth of breast is better than none at all. Give it a try....what will it hurt?
