I think that there are people who feel that way. I have seen also people who think that the main job of a graphic designer is to wear the right clothes and go to the right places. Its quite sad and the worst is that there are many clients and bosses who think in a similar way and consider that a graphic designer is the guy who knows to use photoshop and quark. But there are always places where talent and good work are appreciated and needed. Well, everyone finds his/her place in the end. Try to find yours and don't worry so much about these people.

I'm sure there are those out there who think it's easy. I don't think it's a fad though. A degree in Graphic Design has so many uses.
I know what you mean though. I got tired of hearing people whine about the professor's criticism of their work. They thought "it's art so it's subjective. And it's my work!" Try telling that to a client!
I've always thought of graphic design as artistic problem solving. The client needs a design and you have to decipher what they want and come up with a design; and usually within a certain budget!
Most people don't want to pay tons of money for a design, or for the print costs of complicated designs.
Those people who have poor work ethics and are too snooty about their work, won't get very far in the real world.
I think a lot of people in general who go to college have no real clue about the professions they are studying!
That's why so many people end up doing something completely different than what they studied.

It's considered a "classy" profession. But here in South Texas the high dollar jobs go to those who are of priviledged backgrounds, somebody's kid with no skills or conceptualisation, which is why this area is not exactly a mecca for the arts.
I've found myself doing jobs that have nothing to do with my skills, but expected to do graphic design for free when it's discovered what my hobbies are.
However, it seems that in the 1990's, a lot of companies got wise to what the field was, and fused computer programming in with the trade, alienating a lot of folks who could only use a mouse to make a page layout for printing company newsletters. Webdesign and a knowledge of Flash will enhance your worth in the field. In my case, I took technical design and have worked in architecture, structural and some mechanical. I don't volunteer the fact that I'm also an advanced illustrator becuase it's been too exploited, and I don't like doing work for graphic designers who can't do the work, and them still getting paid for it.

Hi Teni. Good for you! You have worked hard to train for your profession. Your 'competitors' have not worked very hard. This is good news for you! You will have an excellent opportunity to succeed in your chosen profession, while your competitors will be working at Star Bucks, the local bank (teller), or Sears.
The designer world awaits you. Best wishes and good luck.

it's not that it's an easy profession but its like prostituting yourself, an artist who knows how to sway a viewer to see his way is paid top dollar to come up with something using his/her special skills to sway a person to their clients point of view. it's just not fair to society. Graphic designers take advantage of people and their weaknesses and get paid to do so. That is why I decided not to be a graphic designer. your conscience will eventually get to you, or mine would get to me.
