Do lighter colored asphalt shingle roofs last longer?

Question

I am replacing my roof with an asphalt shingle roof. I read on the internet in a few places that lighter colored shingles last longer as they deflect heat better. I also read it's more relevant in the south then the north, since it's hot more often.

I live in the northeast, and was just wondering if this was true, AND how much difference does it make?
I mean, are we talking about extending the roof life a month or years?

Personally I like darker colored roofs style wise better, but if it made a huge difference it seems silly to choose to lower the life of the roof for just the color.

I also live in the northeast. Shingle color really isn't much of a factor here. Obviously a lighter colored shingle would reflect more of the suns rays, but a more important thing is making sure that your roof is properly ventilated. This extends the life of your shingles, prevents ice build up in the winter, and keeps your house cooler in the summer.
Pick what ever color you want! It's not going to make a bit of difference. Ventilation is the key!

It would seem that the lighter colors will reflect more heat and probably last longer, but there are other factors to consider and that would be if it's a single layer roof instead of putting the new one over the old one. It will shorten the life of the new roof, again to the heat build up. Attic ventialtion fans will help keep the attic space cooler and make the roofs last longer. good luck

vanda and fordman are on the right track, attic venting is important. also, the prep work under the roofing, especially the use of ice and water shield, is important since you live in a climate where it snows. i think a light roof color only makes a roof last a year or two longer, but a dark color has a greater impact on the heat build up in the attic, too. and that has a greater impact on the roof system, as it is baked from both sides, and makes cooling the attic harder. good luck, hope this helps
