I want to open a family business. We have decided to try and open a beauty salon with hair, nails skin, tanning. I am not sure how to even start. I need to get a license, I know that. I also know I have to get equipment and things like that, but I don't know how. This is something that my sisters and I REALLY want to do, so any information will be GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks!

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

Location, location, location. Catchy name, start of with good quality used equipment. Contact supply houses to use and sell their products (big source of revenue). Lure away great stylists with a faithful following (offer them more than they are currently making now). Tell them if things go well and they stick it out that there may be an opportunity for their own franchise down the road...and mean it. MUST have enough cash in the bank for at LEAST 18 months worth of overhead. Take as small a salary as you can live with for yourself put the rest back into the business. Grow it fast, sell it, retire.

My wife has owned 5 salons, we now have 2 left.

Keep it as family as you can.

Buy one .. don't build one. People get out of this biz all the time due to staffing problems.

You will make money. You have to be hands on.

Buy a preexisting business or you will be wasting money.
Licensing is easy, insurance is hard.

Stay family.
