In the Bible, God commands that if a man is married and dies without a son, then his brother is to marry the widow and raise up seed for him, so that his name and line will not die out. Needless to say, if the brother is already married, and marries her, that means he will have two wives. Unfortunately, polygamy is frowned upon by many in the Western world. Would you be willing to obey God and suffer persecution, or would you ignore the commandment?

The Old Testament law was a different dispensation. We are now living in the dispensation of Grace. I don't believe this would apply anymore. In Titus, I believe, believers are clearly commanded to be a husband of ONE wife.

Titus 1:6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.

Old Testament law commanded many, many things that are not followed to day because Jesus brought about the dispensation of Grace.

When I was in my early teens, I was shocked to learn that my grandfather was in fact my great uncle. I never knew that the man I called "Grandpa" was not my mother's father. At some point after my mother was born, her father passed away. A few years later, my grandmother married his brother.

sounds like old testament to me. She can carry on some other guys last name and her brother in law can take care of keeping the family name going. Girls in the 'western' world are more often retaining their own family names and can give them to their sons. Did ya know that?

Won't work for us....my husband was adopted and no known family. But, I don't
think I would want to be passed around. But, I do know the Scripture verses that
you are talking about.

Legally speaking, polygamy is not allowed, but that law is only man's... so just because the practice is not officially recognized by the government, that does not mean that the tradition cannot be observed... and my motto is always that I aim to please...

No, even if I was in love with the brother I just would not. It would be weird for my family, his family...and I think even for us.

I don't have a brother, so that's one more thing I don't have to worry about.
