My hero is Don Carlos Buell. He was a Union general in the American Civil War and he commanded the Army of the Ohio/Army of the Cumberland (Nov. 15, 1861 - Oct. 24, 1862). He took notable part in the fighting at the battles of Shiloh (on the second day), and Perryville. He was removed from command for largely political reasons.
He wrote 'Shiloh Reviewed', 'Operations in North Alabama', and 'East Tennesse and the Campaign of Perryville' for the Century Magazine, and which were later collected as part of the 'Battles and Leaders of the Civil War' series.

I really admire Dominique LaPierre.

He wrote "The City of Joy" which is may all time favorite book. It is a non-fiction account of a Polish priest that went to live in the slums of Calcutta. It's one of those life changing books because everything that happens is true. LaPierre went to live in these same slums at the same time. That's how he researched the book. His work is phenomenal! (And I also have a similar deep love for India like he has.)
