The basic principle is to put the variable terms on one side of the equation and the numbers on the other side, then add up the coefficients. This is called "collecting like terms". Remember that when you move a term from one side of the equation to the other, it changes sign (positive to negative or negative to positive). Remember also that x is the same as 1x.

I'll start off with a lot of detail and gradually decrease the detail as I go.

#1) 6s - 10 = s
=> 6s - s = 10
=> (6-1) s = 10
=> 5s = 10
=> s = 10/5 = 2.

#2) 8r= 4r -16
=> 8r - 4r = -16
=> (8-4) r = -16
=> 4r = -16
=> r = -16/4 = -4.

#3) 25 - 3u =2u
=> 25 = 2u + 3u
=> 25 = (2+3)u
=> u = 25 / 5 = 5.

#4) 11m + 13 = m + 23
=> 11 m - m = 23 - 13
=> 10m = 10
=> m = 1.

#5) k + 20 = 9k - 4
=> k - 9k = -4 - 20
=> -8k = -24
=> k = 3.

#6) 14t - 8 = 6t
=> 14t - 6t = 8
=> 8t = 8
=> t = 1.

#7) -4b - 5 = 3b + 9
=> -14 = 3b + 4b
=> 7b = -14
=> b = -2.

#8) 6y - 1 = 27 - y
=> 7y = 28
=> y = 4.

#9) 1.6 - 72 = 4h - 30
=> 4h = -40.4
=> h = -10.1

#10) 8.5 - 3z = -8
=> -3z = -16.5
=> z = 5.5

#11) 10x + 8 = 5x - 3
=> 5x = -11
=> x = -11/5 = -2.2

#12) 16 - 7d = -3d + 2
=> -4d = -14
=> d = 7/2.

Scarlet is correct. The process is to get the variable on one side of the equation by adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing both sides of the equation the same way.
Example:
#1) 6s-10 = s, first add 10 to both sides obtaining
6s = s+10, next subtract s from both sides obtaining
5s = 10, next divide both sides by 5 obtaining
s = 2, this is your answer

Tips: The first two steps could have been done in reverse order without affecting the answer. Be sure to pay close attention to the signs (+ or -).

its been awhile since i was in school 2001, but if my memory serves me correct u bring the 2 likes together.
1. 6s-10=s okay so what u do is do the opposite of what is being done on one side of the equal sign. for instance you would subtract 6s bc it is a positive integer. so...10= -5s. THis may not be right so double check it!!
