so I purchased an AT&T calling card for $10 (with 20 minutes on it). The second I put the PIN number into the phone, AT&T charged me 12 minutes, leaving me with just 8 minutes remaining on the card. This cost in minutes is not stated on the vending machine, and on the reverse of the card, it only says that 2 minutes will be charged on the card. Did they take me for minutes and should I file a complaint? I think its rather rude when big companies (with major bucks) gotta stick it to the little guy. Whats your opinion on this?

To Minus - After I entered my PIN, the lady said "Making a call from this location is an immediate charge of 12 minutes. You have 8 minutes remaining on your card". I took a look at the paper that comes with the card. No mention of excessive minute charges their either.

If there is a "connection charge" it should be disclosed on the card or in a paper disclosure document given to you with the card. If it isn't, you can write to: FCC, FTC, the state regulators (in Illinois it's called the Illinois Commerce Commission) and the state consumer advocate (in Illinois it's the Attorney General - Consumer Fraud Division) I don't know what these are called in Tennesee, but all states have them. You can also complain to the airport operator (which may be the city of Menphis.)

YOu most likely miss read the machine. The ten minutes are charged on a pay phone but you do have the ten minutes to talk and after that you are charged by the minute and you do pay in advance.
Most likely you do not understand what was.
You were not riped off at all. You just did not understand. I hope now you know .

A similar thing happened to us when I was in the hospital (stupid phone company--I'd just had a baby, darnit!). My hubs had bought a phone card from Sam's (couldn't use the cell at all in this hospital), and the phone in my room wasn't working correctly. I don't think it was an AT&T card, but we got screwed using the pay phone as well. I remember being so pissed when he came back to the room and told me. The highway robbery from a pay phone was listed on the cardboard backing for the phone card, not on the card itself.
Sorry, man. They want every last drop of blood.

First I would call AT&T and file a complaint. I would also call the Better Business Bureau and file a complaint with them as well.

at&t usually charges 10 units (minutes) for all calls made from a pay phone. It doesn't charge from a regular phone.
