MLB claims it isn't based on any one player, rather it's an idealised batter.
But I've heard it's Killebrew (the most popular), Rose (can see why MLB wouldn't want to 'fess up to that, were it true), and once that it was Mantle, but I think that claimant was being silly.

Officials at MLB will say that isn't modeled after anyone, but there is a long standing rumor that it is Harmon Killebrew.
